Doing this move without them
Field time, TDY, deployment — the move doesn't wait
Power of attorney, firstA general POA lets you act broadly on their behalf; a special POA covers one named thing (a lease, a closing, a vehicle). Both are free at the Fort Drum Legal Assistance Office — get them before the field problem or deployment, not during it. Not sure where to start? ACS Information & Referral will point you right.ACS I&R (315) 772-6557
Signing without themWith the right POA in hand you can sign a lease, close on a VA loan, and register vehicles solo (NY gives new residents 30 days). Bring orders + POA + IDs to every appointment — it saves the second trip.Questions? ACS (315) 772-6557
The household goods moveA spouse with POA can handle Transportation Office / DPS scheduling. Thinking about a PPM (moving yourselves)? Reimbursement rules changed — get the Transportation Office estimate first, before you commit.Route via ACS (315) 772-6557
House-hunting by proxyOur featured network agent does remote showings — walking houses on video while you watch from wherever you are. One remote buyer put it best: "Joe hoofed it out there in the snow to get me a good look at multiple houses."Meet the network
Arriving without your sponsorIn-processing at Mountain Reception Company is the soldier's job — but housing, schools, TRICARE, and DEERS updates can all move on your side. Start with ACS Relocation Readiness at the Family Resource Center, Bldg 11042 Mount Belvedere Blvd.ACS (315) 772-6557
When you can't reach them for a decisionYour unit's SFRG and the rear detachment exist for exactly this — the people left behind to handle exactly what you're facing. Mobilization & Deployment can connect you if you don't have the SFRG contact yet.Mob/Dep (315) 772-0509
You're not the first spouse to move an entire household while they're in the field — around here it's practically a tradition, and every office above has seen it a hundred times. Ask for exactly what you need.

The big gotcha for nurses
New York is NOT in the Nurse Licensure Compact.
As of August 2026, NY is not an active NLC member — your multistate license cannot be used to practice here. RN spouses must apply for licensure by endorsement through NYSED, using the expedited military-spouse process above. Start the paperwork the day you get orders, and use the 6-month temporary permit to keep working while it processes.
